Opera di Santa Croce

The monumental complex of Santa Croce Founded in 1294, Santa Croce is one of the finest Gothic churches in Italy. It is undoubtedly a kind of on-going building site which over 700 years has lived through a succession of religious, artistic and civic vicissitudes. It is impossible to list all the masterpieces which Santa Croce contains and shelters. The side chapels contain the most relevant masterpieces of fourteenth century Florentine painting, whose highest expression is found in the frescoes with the Stories of St. Francis by Giotto in the Peruzzi and Bardi Chapels, which also house masterpieces of 15°- century sculpture.
In the 19° century, with the unity of Italy, Santa Croce became a place for the celebration of national glory, housing the funeral monuments of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and many other illustrious personages.
