In the NANOMATCH project TECNALIA is responsible for leading WP5 "Towards market", participates very actively mainly in WP2 "Synthesis of new metal-alkoxides as precursor for nano-structured conservation materials", WP3 "Workability, compatibility and efficiency of nano-structured materials for building substrates" and WP4 "Compatibility and performance evaluation of nano-structured materials in field".

In WP2, TECNALIA has worked with the selection of biocide molecules to work in combination with the consolidants for wood and finally proposed commercial biocide products to use in WP3 and WP4.

WP3 deals with the evaluation of the applicability and workability of metal-alkoxides solutions and nanosols on the substrates selected for this study (stone, wood and glass). In this WP, TECNALIA has tested solvents and concentrations of the NANOMATCH consolidants to penetrate in degraded wood. Special care has been taken to avoid undesirable surface whitening caused by calcium carbonate formation in larger visible aggregates. The consolidation tests performed so far are the pH neutralisation effect, surface curing and surface hardening effect. Screening of biocide compatibility has been performed with wood rotting fungi for the selection of final commercial biocide product to use in combination with the consolidants. TECNALIA has also prepared the degraded wood substrates for further studies of consolidation in WP3 and WP4.

WP4 started in month 7 (May 2012). In this WP, the role of TECNALIA is to prepare and treat model wood substrates to be placed on the four field sites. Also historical items have been selected by the partners and treated at TECNALIA before the field test. Initial damage has been evaluated and after the one year field test the performance of the treatments will be assessed.

Finally, TECNALIA leads the WP related to the study of the hazard impact of the metal-alkoxides on the environment and human health during the scaling up process of these alkoxides. In this WP not only will this aspect be studied, but also the costs and benefits of the new products in economic terms. This WP started in May 2012 (month 7) and the work performed so far has been centred mainly in the scaling up of the metal-alkoxides (performed by TOP in the case of the glass application and performed by CNR-ICIS in the case of the wood and stone applications). TECNALIA is in charge of coordinating the whole WP and will mainly contribute to the cost/benefit analysis, exploitation plan and business model, providing information of the Spanish market of the conservation products. WP5 will end in August 2014 (month 34).
